And yet another hair cut.... LOL!

I loved Owen's curly hair. But, it had to be cut. His speech therapist was concerned because Owen didn't know whether he was a girl or boy, and often answered "girl" if someone asked. I kinda figured it wasn't because he's "slow" (he's not, he's a very smart boy). It's because everywhere we go people commented on the "cute girl". Grrr. So, for about 3 or so months now I've been working on cutting his hair. I did it the first time and didn't like it much. So I took him to a professional. Didn't like her cut much either. So I tried again. Didn't like it again (really- nothing will compare to those curls!). His hair was growing back straight though, no hope of growing the curls anymore. So I broke down today and bought a hair trimmer. It's actually pretty nice. I was concerned that with the noise Owen wouldn't let me do it. But he did great! He started to flip out at the end because the hair on him was itching and bugging him (note to self- towel doesn't work well.... invest in one of those professional capes). But we finished and now he's in the bath getting all the cut hair off him. When he gets out and his hair dries I'll take a picture.

Nothing will come close to his curls, but I like this cut much better than any of his other ones in the last few months.

Here he is....

Orthopedic surgeon appointment

Today was Owen's orthopedic surgeon appointment. It was.... frustrating. Very frustrating.

To start with- this appointment was supposed to be 2 weeks ago. Only they called 2 days before it saying there was an "emergency surgery" and the dr would have to reschedule. Okay. So it was rescheduled for last week. 2 days before that appointment they called to reschedule because of another "emergency surgery". That time I ripped into them. It's not a freaking EMERGENCY if the surgery can be scheduled *2* days in advance. If they have that much time to get it done, he could have done it at a time that he wasn't already booked, ya know (for the record- this doctor only does appointments in the afternoons because his mornings are supposed to be for surgery). So, I let them know that I was giving them one more chance. If they called to reschedule this appointment I would be going somewhere else. Only, at that time, I was told the appointment was for this monday. On Friday I got a call (recorded message) confirming his appointment on TUESDAY. Eh, whatever. I called and complained but what are you going to do?

So, appointment came. When I first scheduled the appointment I asked if we could do the x-rays before the appointment to get them done (so Owen would be able to take his time and not be rushed). They agreed that would be a good idea, but they couldn't give me the orders (because, at that time, he wasn't technically their patient). So they told me to get the orders from neurology (who referred him). So, I did. Today at noon I went to neurology to pick up the orders. I asked if there was anything else I needed to do and they said no- just go to x-ray and give them the papers. So I did. And we waited and waited and waited. And finally we were told that we needed to go to the ortho office anyway because neurology never registered him! So we went to the ortho office (fortunately was right next door) and registered. And waited some more. Finally they registered him and sent us back to x-ray. Where we waited even more. By the time he got back to the x-ray machine it was 1:15. Kinda defeated the whole purpose of getting there an hour early. He did great though, stood very still while they got 2 x-rays. Then we went back over to ortho where he saw a resident first. He did all his stuff then sent the head dr in. Head dr did his stuff and said O's x-rays look fine, no scoliosis. He said in kids with NF1 they typically will develop fine until around puberty and then more signs are seen (if they do, in fact, have NF1 and not just the spots). So, everything looks good now. Woo-hoo! He said he wanted to see us back in a year but we agreed that we wouldn't do more x-rays at that time. The resident was pushing for yearly x-rays. I told him I wasn't going to agree to Owen getting x-rays every year. I feel that would do more harm exposing him to that than it'll help. Head doctor agreed. We may do another x-ray in 4 or 5 years if he thinks something has changed.

So head doctor leaves and resident writes up the discharge papers. I took them to the front desk to give them to her. The receptionist schedules the appointment (a year in advice.... like I'll remember it. LOL!) and then tells me.... he gets an x-ray in a year. The d*mn resident wrote on there he needs yearly x-rays despite the head doctor saying he didn't! But, by this time I was late for work, I hadn't eaten anything all day and Owen had been in the hospital for 2 hours. I was done. I'll deal with it in a year.

Everything should come in fry form.

Really. It should. I was trying to figure out what to feed him for dinner. I had the freezer open and he was going through it. He found a box of fish sticks that Jason had bought, wanting to try to feed them to Owen. Normally, Owen wouldn't touch them. But today he took the box and proclaimed "I want these fries for dinner!". So, he got them. And ate 3!! He probably would have eaten more but he also ate a bunch of mac n cheese. WOO-HOO! I have no idea how his OT does it, but he's doing great with eating recently! After 3 years of no meat at all, he's eaten chicken and fish within the month!

Back from the doctor

and I knew it couldn't be so easy as to have Owen *just* get a virus.

His turned into 2 ear infections. Anyone out there surprised? Seriously. Thursday his ears were fine. Here's what the doctor said today as she was looking in his ear...

"Well, the right one is definately infected. No wonder he's been screaming all night. (insert thingy into left ear) Wow! That's what I call a "Med Student Ear Infection". Even a med student can't miss this one". Ugh. Yeah, thanks. So, his right ear is bad, his left ear is horrible. Peachy. 2 more scripts. One for omnicef (antibiotic, twice a day) and the other is for ear drops for the pain. He did amazingly well letting them put ear drops in his ear at the office, didn't squirm at all. I'm very impressed with that!

She also says he's got junk in his chest but it's not in his lungs so it's fine. Basically he just needs to cough it all up.

Hopefully his ears will be numb all night and I'll get some freaking sleep!

sick update and physical therapy eval

6 days later, Owen's still ill. His cough is horrible. Last night I could hear it just rattling in his chest. He's *still* running a fever, on and off (mostly on at night, off during the day). He just looks ill. I think I may end up taking him to the doctor tonight, we'll see. Last night he was up half the night screaming again. Same as every night since last wednesday. I'm pretty sure if it was just a virus, it's not anymore.

And, I get the bad mom award. Not only is my child ill, I still made him go to therapy. Today was his last day with his current speech therapist. Next week he has off then the week after that he starts with a new therapist.

After ST he had a PT evaluation. The PT said that he has some "extra mobility" in his legs. Basically that means he has some weakness in his legs that causes him to be clumsy and to not work his legs as hard as he could/should (which is why he can't ride a bike, among other things). He also has some weakness in his trunk that causes him to not be able to sit up straight without support. So, physical therapist recommends we start PT once a week. She said he shouldn't be in it for "too long", but had no answer on how long is "not too long". He starts that the week after next week.

Being a SAHM was so much easier

The reality has sunk in. Working out of the home and having a child kinda sucks when he gets ill.

Yesterday Owen came to work with me. He wasn't running a fever and said he was feeling fine. We gave him the option of going home when Jason got off work (he was going to come pick him up) but Owen said he wanted to stay and play.

But today he's throwing up. He missed therapy this morning (I felt a little lost not having therapy to go to! LOL!). I can't let him go to school/daycare puking though. Jason can normally work from home in an emergency. He's currently trying to get out of work to come home and work from home. However, it's a friday. Which means he needs to be at his second job at 5:30 (about a 30 minute drive in traffic so he needs to leave by 5). I don't get out of work until 6 (home around 6:15). Yup, slight problem. I *could* ask Jason's parents to come watch Owen for an hour or so. But they're slightly older and not in the best of health. Even if this is *just* a virus, I don't want them getting sick. After a call to my work I think we have it figured out. Jason's going to come home and watch Owen while I go to work for a couple hours. I'm going to leave early (4:45) so that Jason can get to his second job somewhat on time. I have no idea who is going to watch the infants though, as apparently the girl who works in the room with me just asked our boss if she could leave early too. D'oh! I think her daughter (almost 3) is ill too. She was running a fever yesterday.

Anyway.... all that to say- it was much easier being a SAHM. Never realized it before, but it really was much easier!

Woo-hoo! My son is normal! LOL!

For once he just has a virus. Woo!!! His temp went over 104 last night (up to 104.5 is the highest I caught). He was up and down all night, spent most of the night screaming and crying. I talked to the nurse on call and decided to keep him home and call the dr at 8 when they open. They got him in at 8:45. Around 3 he was in so much pain and not getting any rest at all so I tried to give him tylenol (ha. I wore more than actually made it in his mouth). He got just enough to settle him down a little though and slept slightly better until morning (I can't even count how many times he was up screaming last night). Anyway, his throat is pretty bad but rapid strep came back negative so we're treating as if it's viral (no antibiotics, just tylenol as needed (he's doing much better so I doubt we'll do anymore), popsicles, water/juice). I think this is quite possibly the first time he's gotten ill and it's "only" been a virus.

Oh man, not again :(

O's sick again. He was fine all day. Then around 6:30 we were getting out of the car to go into the gym and he just looked off. Then he threw a huge fit because I wouldn't let him eat a goldfish cracker that was on the ground. That lead to a coughing fit that sounded like he was going to throw up. Put him back in the car and came home. Took his temp.... 101.5. Bummer. He says his tummy and mouth hurt. I'm hoping it's a tummy bug and he's better by morning. It's going to suck if he starts his strep/tonsilitis count already, just 2 weeks into the new year (if he gets tonsilitis/strep 3 times (I think it was) this year they'll talk about taking them out).

The sleep positions of Owen...

Owen cracks me up with all his sleeping positions. He *has* to be moving (flipping around, kicking, etc) to fall asleep. By the time he's actually asleep... you never know where he's going to be! These were taken within the last couple weeks....

And, yes, with that last one he managed to get all his stuffed animals on top of him before he fell asleep. Talented, I tell ya!

OMG!

I'm in love with this ring!!!

Damn you, Sam, for making me read your wedding journal and putting these thoughts in my head again. LOL! Jason will not be happy with you. LOL! Now, somehow, I need to get this hint to Jason.... LOL!

Date night

Woo-hoo! Last night Jason and I had a date night. Owen stayed with Jason's parents (he LOVES it over there, didn't care that Jason and I were leaving and didn't want to go home when we came back. LOL!). We went out to PF Changs for dinner then to see the movie I Am Legend. It was pretty good. Not what I expected, but pretty good. Except the ending. That threw me for a loop.

Anyway, reason we went out was because I got good news at work last week. I have been working part time (Mon-Fri from 2-6). On Friday they asked if I'd be interested in picking up some extra hours in February, March and maybe April. One of the other ladies who works there (in the 1 year old room) is going on vacation for 2-3 months (back to her home country). Before they considered hiring someone else they wanted to give me the chance to accept/decline it. I still had to take O's therapy into consideration so I will be working Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings (and afternoons) and Tuesday and Friday afternoons (O's therapy are those mornings though). Yay! I'm so happy that they apparently think I'm doing a good job (or else they wouldn't be offering me more hours). I'm up for a potential raise at the end of February/beginning of March so this is perfect timing too. I guess if you do well you automatically get a raise after 3 months (don't even have to ask). If you don't do well, you don't get a raise. The lady who works the infant room in the morning has been there for 5 months and hasn't gotten her raise... and doesn't understand why. I could tell you why, but it would put a damper on my happy post. I really don't care for those lady. As an individual she's nice. As a daycare worker.... she pisses me off.

So.... yay! I'm also thrilled I'll be in the 1 year old room on those mornings, more than likely. We have 2 babies who were in the infant room who moved to the 1 year old room. One of those (we'll call her *K*) is an absolutely precious little girl. She automatically took to me and grew very attached. Whenever I came in the room she dropped everything and came to me. If it was me and a bunch of the other workers (who she's known for a lot longer than me!) she would chose me every single time. But then she had to move out of my room :( I still see *K* a couple times a week but I have to be careful to go over there when her mom gets there. If I go see her at any other time she FLIPS out when I have to go back to my room (the infant and 1 year old room are attached with a bathroom so we can open the bathroom door to go to the 1 year old room if we need something). I have "kidnapped" *K* back to the infant room on occaision too. LOL! But, anyway, I'm so happy I'll get to see her 3 mornings a week now!!!!

Jason's birthday is tomorrow. Nothing special really planned. We'll do dinner out with his parents (that's what they do on birthday's). Next Sunday we'll do dinner and a movie again (which is really funny because I had it planned with Jason's parents without Jason knowing because I wanted to surprise him with dinner and a movie.... until Friday came and Jason decided he wanted to surprise me with dinner and a movie this sunday. LOL). Oh well, 2 date's in a week. I'm not complaining ;)

Alright, gotta run. Need to go to the bank (have 3 paychecks I haven't cashed yet), get my oil changed then get some lunch, figure out what's for dinner and get to work. After work we'll go to the gym.

And quick medical update...

Owen went to the geneticist Friday.

I have a huge long detailed post written out on another board. If anyone is that interested I'll copy and paste. Otherwise- you get the short condensed version. LOL!

Re: spots- he has a lot. LOL. She measured some, looked over his body really good to find them all (and pointed out some I hadn't even noticed!). Basically we watch and wait. There's a test we could do (blood test) to see if he has Neurofibromatosis. But it has a fairly decent false negative rate. And there is no cure for NF at this time. So, basically what that means, is if it came back positive she would tell us to wait and watch (and continue yearly eye exams). If it comes back negative she's going to tell us to wait and watch (and continue yearly eye exams). We are not having this test done. I see no reason to, right now, since the outcome will be the same. Right now we will continue watching for the other signs of NF and continue yearly eye exams to watch for tumors in the eyes.

Re: eye disease- The geneticist says that Owen has a 50/50 chance at having the retinitis pigmentosa. This is in his fathers family and goes back at least 5 generations (that they've been able to trace) and has hit every single person. It hasn't skipped anyone. Now, this sounds like a really scary thing and, honestly, has scared the crap out of me for years. But, as the geneticists explained, it's like flipping a coin- sometimes you get lots of heads in a row, sometimes you get lots of tails and sometimes you get an even number. Matt's family appears to have had a long stroke of bad luck. But it doesn't mean Owen will be part of that. While, unfortunately, there is a 50% chance he has it, there's also a 50% chance he doesn't! She cannot do the genetic testing for that. If/when we decide to we will go to Harvard to have it done (matt's family is part of a study and they (people at Harvard) have already expressed interest in testing Owen). Right now we continue yearly eye exams to watch for signs of it. If he has it they wouldn't expect to see any signs of it until teenish years.

The geneticist is strongly urging me to consent to chromosome testing. She said that with Owen's developmental delays there may be something else going on that we hadn't thought of yet. I am torn on this issue, but I'm leaning towards consenting. It's such a complicated issue when you take everything into consideration. Nobody wants to think there's anything "wrong" (how I hate that word) with their child. But on the other hand- no mother wants to find out years down the road that something is "wrong" and they could have done something all these years to help him.

Anyway, that's the short version Smile

More pictures...

Being spoiled on Christmas afternoon at Jason's parents house.

Taken a few days ago.... SNOW! The most snow we've seen here this season. And yes, our tiny amount of snow actually closed schools down! LOL! It's not even snow. It's snow spit. LOL!

When he came in he found Jason and tried to hit him with a snowball. Little did he know that Jason would just pick it up and throw it back!

Where's Owen?? This is how he loves to sleep.

"What? You don't play your Leapster while standing on your head? What's wrong with you??" LOL!

So, almost 2 weeks later, Christmas pictures!

I know, I know. I suck at this blogging thing. LOL!

Owen, in front of the tree Christmas morning.

"Look mom! Santa did bring me socks, underwear and white undershirts!!!". That's all he asked Santa for. In a red package. LOL! On Christmas Eve. Yes, we went shopping on Christmas Eve just to fulfill his wish of socks, undewear and undershirts.

Mom gets a little cranky when dealing with endless boxes and packages.

Woo! Thomas Legos!

I can't hear you. I have a Leapster. LOL!
