Pictures

Owen got a new bed (mattress and box spring) last week. Of course, he had to have new bedding too ;) Wall-E!

The rest of these pictures were taken over the weekend, at the children's museum with Allison and her kids.

The boys in a cave.

Looking at x-rays and other stuff.

Owen mesmerized by balls spinning around in circles. Shocker!

Jason and Owen playing music (with flip flops... lol)

In the bubble room!

His butt kept popping the bubble!

Popping the bubble wall.

On the moon!

Owen and mama with the dinosaur we built (Jason helped).

Climbing a rock wall.

Mia playing in the water.

And being cute. I could NOT get her to smile at the right time. LOL! Every time she smiled my camera wasn't ready. Every time my camera was ready she was looking at me like I was crazy, trying to get her to smile.

Jocelyn being adorable.

Playing with the foods.

This picture reminds me of Wizard of Oz....

Jocelyn not looking too happy to be riding in a truck with Owen. Meanwhile, Owen's forcing a smile to get the picture over with so he can jump out and run.

Garden pics to follow later...

If my hair is completely white by Sam's wedding....

blame Owen! Good grief this kid is just not going to let me breathe a sigh of relief anytime soon.

I took him to the dr this morning for a check-up. No fever (hasn't had one since Friday), ears and mouth all look good (all his sores in his mouth are gone), belly felt and sounded good. His blood pressure was high but, after getting some advice from mom, we took it at home in a non-stressful situation and it was fine- well within normal for his age.

He was doing fine all day- running around and playing, eating and drinking well. For dinner we went to Bob Evans and he had 2 pancakes, a large bowl of applesauce and 2 helpings of home fries. He did fine for about 3 1/2 hours after dinner. Then, when we were at the grocery store, he started looking out of it- not himself. I picked him up and he just looked at me with those sad little eyes and said he couldn't walk anymore because his belly hurt ;( We got through the rest of the store quickly and went home. He doesn't have a fever (97.0 in the ear). He says his tummy "really hurts", but I don't know exactly what that means. His belly is a lot harder than it normally is, but that could be because he ate a large dinner. He's not constipated (since he was in the hospital we had been giving him something to make him poop- he went a week without going- so he should be pretty cleared out by now).

This is not like him at all. In 5 1/2 years he's NEVER complained of belly pain until last week. Not even when he was vomiting and pooping so much he ended up in the ER years ago did he complain of pain. This is just so.... not like him. And I feel completely helpless.

What I do know, though, is I'm going to be completely on edge now. With having no explanation for the "free fluid" in the belly, it's making me a nervous wreck. I just have a "mom feeling" that we've not seen the end of this issue. I hope to God I'm wrong.

Owen update, garden, and stuff

Owen is doing MUCH better now! He's up and running and eating and playing and being a little troublemaker ;) His appetite has definitely come back and he's eating tons. Tonight for dinner he ate 4 pieces of pizza and 8 breadsticks/sauce!!!! That's a whole order of breadsticks and half the pizza! LOL! He's asking for food constantly (at least once an hour) and, of course, we give it to him. He goes to the dr tomorrow just as a little check-up after the hospital visit... I bet he's gained back all the lost weight for sure! (He was 41 lbs last Monday and 39 lbs 2 days later)

Here's the garden...

The first ripe tomatoes (Early Girl)! Almost ready... another day or two and then they'll be ready to pick!

Some of the cherry tomatoes

Cherry tomato plant

Cucumber plant that seems to be dying. Hmmmm....

Green bell pepper plant... lots of flowers, no peppers yet...

A couple Mr Stripey tomatoes

First yellow squash! Another day or two and it'll be ready to pick!

Another zucchini... we've eaten a few from the garden in the last couple weeks....

Green bell pepper.... almost ready!

I think this is the jalapeno plant. I'm still debating on whether to move it or not. The zucchini and yellow squash are overgrowing it. I was hoping it would grow bigger and above the squash leaves but I'm not so sure...

Purple bell pepper plant. It's having the same issues as the jalapeno.... trying to decide whether to move it or leave it....

Watermelon plant

In other news.... I will be starting college next month. I will be doing a program that is 2 years at a local community college and then moving on to 2 years at the University of Kentucky for teaching. I just got my financial aid info yesterday and I got enough grants to cover all tuition and all books/fees with some leftover to cover parking pass, gas to get there, and other little expenses. This is WAY more than I thought I would get. I was hoping to get enough to come close to covering tuition, I didn't imagine I'd get enough to cover EVERYTHING. This is great news because when I start classes I'll have to cut down on my hours at work. So.... guess I can't back down now ;) The plan is to take classes Tuesday and Thursday between 8 and 1:45 (which is 4 classes) so I can drop Owen off at school (7:45) and pick him up (2:30). I am also going to try to take a class on Monday evenings. I will hopefully be working Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 8 (or 8:30) to 2. I may also work Tuesday and Thursday from 3-6, but I am not sure.

Owen update....

I know most of you (family, anyway) know about what happened the last few days. But, for those of you who don't.... here's the rundown....

Last post was about Owen being ill. He got an antibiotic shot on Monday, but instead of getting better- he got worse. On Wednesday early afternoon I took him back to the dr. The dr said he was borderline dehydrated but if he would drink a small cup of water she would send him home. After much coaxing, he drank it. And home he went. A few hours later his fever went up to 106 and he was curled up in a ball crying/moaning that his belly hurt. We rushed to the ER where they did blood work, urine work, ultrasound, and x-rays and hooked him up to an IV for fluids. The blood work came back okay, except elevated white blood cell count. Urine came back fine. Ultrasound and x-rays were fine (except they couldn't see the appendix). At this time they admited him to the hospital, up on the children's floor (he finally got his bed at 7am Thursday so we spent all wednesday night in the ER).

Thursday he had a fever on and off all day, refused to eat or drink anything and was looking pretty bad. They had him hooked up to the IV for fluids since he wasn't taking anything by mouth.

These 2 pictures were taken Thursday.

On Friday we insisted on a CT scan to see the appendix. By the afternoon Owen was looking a little bit better and was starting to drink and eat a little. We unhooked the fluids on Friday afternoon, hoping he would start to feel thirsty and he would drink some. On Friday he drank 2 ounces total.

Here he is looking slightly better on Friday afternoon. At least he was out of his bed.

Friday evening the dr came to give us the results of the ct scan- no inflammed appendix, but there was free fluid surrounding it. At this time she said Owen was on an order to consume nothing by mouth.... except he was eating pizza at the time she was saying it. Oops! We asked the nurse prior to giving it to him and she said it was fine. Doh! So we waited for the surgeon....

The surgeon finally came up and took a look at him. Based on what he saw (a little guarding, but not much. Owen didn't scream in pain when dr touched his belly, he was walking around and eating, etc) he said no surgery that night unless things went downhill fast. He gave the ok for Owen to eat and drink (he had 11 ounces of water total on Friday) up until midnight and then nothing until they saw him in the morning. He gave the order for the nurses to check on Owen constantly during the night to make sure he didn't have any complications.

Fortunately Owen did great Friday night! On Saturday morning he woke up in a fairly good mood, wanted to eat and drink (he had to wait for the okay). The surgeons came in, looked at him, and said no surgery since he was acting so well. They couldn't explain what the free fluid is or why it's there, so that's a bit concerning. They did say that we need to be really careful and bring him back if he gets a fever, vomiting, or severe belly pain. But the doctors all agreed we could go home that day. After the okay to eat, Owen ate a bowl of cereal and a banana (and 1/2 cup of water). YAY!

Here he is Saturday late morning/early afternoon, reading me a story.

A SMILE! The first one in.... close to a week!

Tonight Owen decided he wanted to go see some fireworks. We packed him up and drove the 10ish minutes back to the hospital (we watch them from the parking garage). By the time we made it there, the little guy was passed out :(

I am hoping he wakes up tomorrow feeling better. He did eat quite a bit since he was home from the hospital, but the last hour or so he was awake he was acting a bit more out of it. Hopefully that was just because he was tired though.

But now I'll do the overprotective mom thing and overanalyze every little thing he does ;)
