Last post was about Owen being ill. He got an antibiotic shot on Monday, but instead of getting better- he got worse. On Wednesday early afternoon I took him back to the dr. The dr said he was borderline dehydrated but if he would drink a small cup of water she would send him home. After much coaxing, he drank it. And home he went. A few hours later his fever went up to 106 and he was curled up in a ball crying/moaning that his belly hurt. We rushed to the ER where they did blood work, urine work, ultrasound, and x-rays and hooked him up to an IV for fluids. The blood work came back okay, except elevated white blood cell count. Urine came back fine. Ultrasound and x-rays were fine (except they couldn't see the appendix). At this time they admited him to the hospital, up on the children's floor (he finally got his bed at 7am Thursday so we spent all wednesday night in the ER).
Thursday he had a fever on and off all day, refused to eat or drink anything and was looking pretty bad. They had him hooked up to the IV for fluids since he wasn't taking anything by mouth.
These 2 pictures were taken Thursday.

On Friday we insisted on a CT scan to see the appendix. By the afternoon Owen was looking a little bit better and was starting to drink and eat a little. We unhooked the fluids on Friday afternoon, hoping he would start to feel thirsty and he would drink some. On Friday he drank 2 ounces total.
Here he is looking slightly better on Friday afternoon. At least he was out of his bed.

Friday evening the dr came to give us the results of the ct scan- no inflammed appendix, but there was free fluid surrounding it. At this time she said Owen was on an order to consume nothing by mouth.... except he was eating pizza at the time she was saying it. Oops! We asked the nurse prior to giving it to him and she said it was fine. Doh! So we waited for the surgeon....
The surgeon finally came up and took a look at him. Based on what he saw (a little guarding, but not much. Owen didn't scream in pain when dr touched his belly, he was walking around and eating, etc) he said no surgery that night unless things went downhill fast. He gave the ok for Owen to eat and drink (he had 11 ounces of water total on Friday) up until midnight and then nothing until they saw him in the morning. He gave the order for the nurses to check on Owen constantly during the night to make sure he didn't have any complications.
Fortunately Owen did great Friday night! On Saturday morning he woke up in a fairly good mood, wanted to eat and drink (he had to wait for the okay). The surgeons came in, looked at him, and said no surgery since he was acting so well. They couldn't explain what the free fluid is or why it's there, so that's a bit concerning. They did say that we need to be really careful and bring him back if he gets a fever, vomiting, or severe belly pain. But the doctors all agreed we could go home that day. After the okay to eat, Owen ate a bowl of cereal and a banana (and 1/2 cup of water). YAY!
Here he is Saturday late morning/early afternoon, reading me a story.

A SMILE! The first one in.... close to a week!

Tonight Owen decided he wanted to go see some fireworks. We packed him up and drove the 10ish minutes back to the hospital (we watch them from the parking garage). By the time we made it there, the little guy was passed out :(

I am hoping he wakes up tomorrow feeling better. He did eat quite a bit since he was home from the hospital, but the last hour or so he was awake he was acting a bit more out of it. Hopefully that was just because he was tired though.
But now I'll do the overprotective mom thing and overanalyze every little thing he does ;)

Poor guy! Glad he seems to be doing better and that you got to go out and see fireworks!
